Last night’s gig at the Islington Bar Academy was truly an experience. A Rollercoaster Ride of emotions.
I arrive at 5:45 just as Boy Kill Boy are finishing their sound check. They’re doing “Suzie” and I want to cry because it sounds so good. I haven’t heard them for a year and they’re just magnificent! What a relief.
I wait for my sound check…and wait….turns out I would’ve had to’ve been there at 3pm to’ve had one. That’s what you get for being a last minute addition to the bill!
I'm 'headlining', and I've had no sound check.

Tim falls into the abyss.

Anyway, The Wows are then sound checking. I overhear they’re all about 15-16 years old. They’re a two girl-one boy, Busted-esque, very now looking band. They’re surrounded by what looks like an entourage of adults to stop them imploding under the weight of being that young, and being in London doing THIS gig. They’re very very excitable and having a wail of a time.
I ask Chris the guy in charge of stuff if there’s anywhere I can leave my bag and coat?
Chris tells Tim he can do better than that and leads Tim through a maze of corridors to a dressing room with a sign stuck on the door saying “Tim Ten Yeng”.
I've got my own fridge and oh my God it’s got beer in it.
And cans of coke. And free water.
Free stuff.

Tim rises straight back out of the Abyss up into a beautiful rainbow.

…to the gig itself…

The Wows – un-naturally professional for a group that young. Really cool drummer, and he knows it.

Boy Kill Boy – Magnificence personified. It’s not just ‘Suzie’, the whole of their set is amazing. They said after the sound check they were slightly rusty having been in the studio for a couple of months. Ah ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. Nope. And I never realised how much I loved Chris’ voice.

Me – I thought the audience might disappear, but they stayed, they laughed they cried, they cheered at the end of each song.
They were beautiful, each and every last one of them.

Panama Jake, lead male dancer, is in the audience and reads the crowd like the back of his hat.

He holds back...holds back…holds back…hold it…...until half way through the set then WOOOSSSHH – no stopping him.
Like a Shaolin Master at the top of his game.

If you’re reading this and you came, I love you.

If you’re reading this and you wanted to come but couldn’t…I love you and maybe

See you on the 11th Feb!
